SMH Sheards Announces the Retirement of Director Carolyn Atkinson

SMH Sheards has announced that Director Carolyn Atkinson will retire on 31 January, bringing to a close a hugely successful career spanning more than 40 years with the firm.

Carolyn joined Sheards in July 1985 after completing a Foundation Course in Accountancy at Huddersfield University. In 1990, she became the firm’s first female partner, a milestone moment for Sheards and the wider Huddersfield accountancy community.

Throughout her career, Carolyn has played a key role in shaping the culture of the firm. She has mentored countless colleagues, supported their development, and helped build a supportive, people-focused environment where high professional standards and strong client relationships go hand in hand. Many of the firm’s long-standing client relationships reflect the trust and continuity she has helped establish over many years.

Carolyn was also closely involved in guiding the firm through periods of change and growth, including its successful merger with SMH Group in April 2024. Alongside her fellow Directors, she has supported the firm’s commitment to giving back, playing an active role in charity fundraising and community initiatives across the region.

Kevin Winterburn, Director at SMH Sheards, said: “Carolyn has been a huge part of this firm for more than 40 years. Her knowledge, professionalism and calm leadership have made a lasting impact on Sheards and everyone who has worked alongside her. She has always put people first, whether that’s clients or colleagues, and that legacy will stay with the firm long after her retirement.”

As Carolyn prepares for retirement, SMH Sheards would like to thank her for her outstanding contribution, leadership, and dedication. She leaves behind a strong team, a loyal client base, and a firm that continues to reflect the values she has championed throughout her career.

SMH Sheards will continue to operate as normal following Carolyn’s retirement, supported by the same experienced team and leadership. Clients will continue to receive the same high level of service, continuity, and local support from the Huddersfield office.
